How I Started ...
My first instrument was the saxophone. It was in the 80's and it seemed like every song had a sax solo (and also Bowie started out playing sax.) But, I had to carry it around mid-Manhattan to my teacher's place, and when I started smoking I just couldn't play it or lug it anymore.
I was writing lyrics and poems ever since I can remember. Somewhere around '92, I went out and got a 4 track Tascam tape, put steel strings on my little sister's classical guitar, bought a Beatles songbook and a chord dictionary. I figured out the basic structures and worked out my first songs. At first, everything sounded like a Syd Barrett bootleg, untill I got my own feel for things.
Now that I'm living out in the country, most of my songs come naturally from this scenery. The mountains and rivers and trees around. I've got a 1970's Epiphone Texan 12-string guitar, it sounds real nice played 'neath a Eucalyptus tree.
I keep to my songs and they keep back to me.
